SIFT THEM OR SHIFT THEM
‘MYANMAR JUNTA ACCUSED OF DELAY IN STORM RELIEF’, ‘MYANMAR VOTES AS RULERS KEEP TIGHT GRIP ON AID,’ ‘JUNTA LEADERS POWER-HUNGRY AS PEOPLE STARVE,’ ‘JUNTA; SUU KYI DESERVES FLOGGING,’ ‘MUGABE’S BRUTALITY TO FORCE ELECTION VICTORY IS REVEALED,’ ‘ZIMBABWE ARMY UNLEASHING TERROR,’ ‘MUGABE MUST CALL OFF HIS DOGS,’ ‘MUGABE JUNTA HAS KILLED 66’.
These news headlines give us only a tiny glimpse of the atrocities that are being carried out by the military junta in Myanmar and by Robert Mugabe and the army in Zimbabwe. Many citizens in these two countries and the millions of refugees (thousands from Myanmar are now in Malaysia) are experiencing untold suffering.
How should we be praying for such dictatorial rulers who have brought their countries to both democratic and economic collapse? One possible answer, referring to a similar situation, was given to me by my vicar (senior pastor) in 1951 when I was a newly ordained young pastor in UK. (This is the only piece of his advice that I can remember!)
“ASK GOD TO SIFT THEM OR SHIFT THEM!”
